Krug Park
Krug Park is often referred to as St. Joseph's oldest park. While other areas were given for public use earlier, it is true that Krug Park was the first public outing area under the jurisdiction of the board of park commissioners which received public expenditure. As such, it was developed before any other parks. On February 26, 1890, Henry Krug, donated 10 acres to the City for use exclusively as a park.
In the winter Krug Park is turned into Holiday Park. Over 100,000 visitors tour Holiday Park annually. It is the largest display in Northwest Missouri and precedes the Kansas City area park displays. The East Hills Optimists, in cooperation with the Parks, Recreation and Civic Facilities Department, have sponsored the park since its first opening December 5th, 1981. Volunteers and contributors have made this dream of a winter wonderland in Krug Park a reality over the years. Hyde Park displays started with a big Merry Christmas sign in 1993. The dream is to eventually adorn the nine-mile parkway linking one park to the other.
